Samhain is the Gaelic word for “Summers End” and in some Gaelic dictionaries it also means “November”. Being a lover of autumn and having a birthday in November, it only seemed fitting to name our kennel Samhain when I stumbled across the word in a novel I was reading. As it also sounds like salmon, and Mark being a fisherman, it was the perfect choice.

While both Mark & I have been involved in dogs all of our lives we’ve just been owned by Cardigans since March 2006. We both believe they are the perfect dog for us. Cardigans are extremely intelligent, loyal clowns. Great emphasis needs to be placed on “clowns” as they do whatever it takes to make you laugh.

Cardigans may not be for everyone. They shed, and shed some more, and in multiple quantities can tend to bark. Socialization from the time they come into your home is required. A properly socialized dog is a happy relaxed dog.

We also believe structure and temperament are paramount to the breed. Without one or the other they cannot be what a Cardigan was originally intended for. Cardigans are first and foremost herding dogs, and we get the icing on the cake with the fact that they are affectionate family companions as well.

We’re expecting our first litter in November of 2007. Stay tuned for updates!
